About the painting, “Welcome to the The Land of Goshen”
The Land of Goshen is our community's nickname. It encompasses the Greater Glen Carbon and Edwardsville Communities. As I understand the story behind the name, it was given to our region by the original settler near the area where Judy Creek and the valley divide the bluff on the western side of Glen Carbon. Like my family, my friends, and neighbors, we are a community of transplants from other towns and regions. We landed here for the abundant agricultural, economic, and educational opportunities available in our towns. Highlighting the flow of the creek into the valley symbolizes that migration.
The water towers not only mark the three communities that enrich our town, but the water tower itself represents stability and support. Many of the colors used in this painting are a nod to the schools and districts that educate us. The horseradish plants growing in the purple and orange fields represent not only the uniqueness of our area but also, more obviously, our agricultural roots. Less obviously, each plant represents the growth and education of our children. Redbud trees and golden hay bales reinforce the iconic beauty that surrounds us. The Glen Carbon Covered Bridge over Judy Creek serves as a metaphor for how multiple municipalities, institutions, businesses, and organizations work together to connect and strengthen The Land of Goshen.
